TRANS-SEASONAL UNIFORM

Thursday, August 18, 2011
How good are these bright red J Brand jeans? They fit pretty well - on the bum and into my trans-seasonal wardrobe. They're a light cotton twill so are perfect for the 'sorta autumn' we'll be having here in the next couple of months. Paired with one of my thrifted nautical tees and basic black flats:  Hello trans-seasonal uniform! And I'll wack on a khaki parker for any chilly days. Done and done.

What are your key trans-seasonal pieces?

CAPSULE WARDROBE

Sunday, August 7, 2011
Over the weekend I put together a small capsule collection of clothes, aka my 13 piece capsule wardrobe. I then played around over the whole weekend - seeing how many outfits I could put together and trying to understand whether it would be possible to get away with a wardrobe with a very small number of items. You may remember my packing guide I did here, well this project saw me further work on the theory that less is actually more when it comes to getting dressed. Stay tuned for how I went.
What's in my 13 Piece Capsule Wardrobe?
Shoes: Mango booties, black Anniel ballet flats (everyone needs a pair), New Look black wide heel sandals (interchangeable for any black heels)
Tops: A Pair & A Spare silk pocket tank, thrifted long sleeve breton top (a must!), thrifted white t-shirt
Bottoms: A Pair & A Spare black lace shorts, Whistles denim mini shorts, DIY pink mini skirt, Uniqlo dark denim skinny leg jeans
Dress: Black bodycon Whistles dress (the perfect every-occasion LBD)
Jacket: H&M Khaki hooded jacket
Scarf: multi-colour large scarf

I put these items together to challenge myself - could I be more creative with outfits when under pressure to only wear a few items? You may feel you need completely different items in your capsule wardrobe - and if the weather permitted I would definitely throw in my black leather jacket.

What would you put in your capsule wardrobe?

The Perfect Wardrobe Essentials

Wednesday, June 22, 2011
As most of us know, essential items are the backbone of a functional and gorgeous wardrobe. If you've been following me for a while you will have read about my Wardrobe Rehab Project - where I used 6 steps to (attempt to) perfect the contents of my closet. I found that with an arsenal of high quality and well fitting essentials, you should be able to mix and match a multitude of outfits that suit every occasion. Although I often reflect or DIY a trend when I like it – blindly following trends can lead to regrettable, never worn, purchases. (Cue Clueless soundbite – Dionne: ‘Dude what’s wrong, are you suffering from buyers remorse or something?’ Cher: ‘God no, nothing like that’). So for the last 6 months I have I put a ban on buying cheap disposable items (no H&M or crazy sale purchases for me) and got to work creating my ideal wardrobe, made up of perfect essentials. Although getting my essentials down pat was never going to happen over night (I'm not made of money), 6 months on I think I am doing pretty well. I decided to put this little collage together of my wardrobe essentials, most of which I have in my wardrobe by now.

Mixing and matching the styles in this collage is fun - so much outfit potential to take you from the office, to out on the town, to the beach and well, just about anywhere.

To refresh on the tips I posted in my Wardrobe Rehab Essentials post, the things that have helped me to develop my essentials are:
1. I have tried to stick to a neutral colour palette for essential items. When faced with a choice of buying coloured or neutral for a specific item, I chose the latter (black, navy, white, came, khaki) for longevity. I added a little bit of red for pop - I love wearing it so I think it's allowed to be in the 'essentials' category.
2. When in doubt, I go for a 'frenchy' aesthetic, as you can probably see. I love to buy out there items but in the area of essentials, French chic proves long lasting
3. I tried to buy the best quality I could afford (the Sofia Cuppola LV bag in the image is OBV a pipe dream), by rationing purchases of smaller items to save for larger essential items.
4. I mix in vintage or DIY styles for on trend items.
5. I actually found lots of my essentials - breton tops, camel skirts and dresses and some accessories - in thrift stores. I find sometimes that the quality of vintage clothes trumps new cheap styles.

The Essential - Nautical Striped Tops

Wednesday, June 8, 2011
If you only buy one thing, make it a nautical striped top. Or 5. Interestingly enough I bought my first nautical tee only a few years ago, and since then I can't help but collect them. They are so incredibly wearable and go with just about anything. Whenever I go thrifting I always seem to find one to bring home - thrifted ones are the best as they are always a little worn in and soft. By the way - I have started using my old Tumblr account again, as a location for all the DIYs I get sent and the odd inspiration pic, so check it out.

Gap. Thrifted. Esprit. Thrifted. Thrifted.

How To Pack For A Holiday

Tuesday, May 31, 2011
Recently I've been posting little snaps of the contents of my suitcase whenever I have gone away for a trip, and have got quite a few emails from people asking me if I could share my packing tips. There is nothing worse than arriving at your destination only to realize you don’t have the right clothes, or worse still, your clothes don’t go well together. Having lived in London and travelling with budget airlines like Easyjet, you become quite good at packing lightly so as not to get stung by the massive checked in baggage fees.  You basically want to create a small yet versatile capsule wardrobe that will fit in your carry on. Sounds impossible you say? Not in the slightest.
How to Pack:
Step 1.  Check the weather and the cultural expectations – this one is obvious, you want to know what type of clothes you'll need. Obviously you need more clothes for travel to colder destinations. Add jackets, tights, hats and boots as required. Its also useful to do a Google search and check whether your destination will be a place you can wear skimpier outfits or somewhere you should be covered up. There’s nothing worse than arriving somewhere and feeling like the unfortunate centre of attention. When in doubt, always take a few conservative pieces just in case and check out what the women are wearing when you arrive.
Step 2. Gather Your Basics - Without fail I always take the following things with me – breton style nautical top, black and white singlets/tees, khaki hooded cotton jacket, leather shorts, denim jeans, one LBD  (black bodycon number usually works well) and a white silk collared shirt. As in every day life, good basics are the foundation of a versatile travel wardrobe.
Step 3. Add key colour items – choose a colour palette for a few additional pieces. This reduces the likelihood of having mismatched outfits. Depending on what I have in my wardrobe I usually add a maxi skirt (great for travelling), long sleeved shirt, a few mini skirts and a pair of shorts in my chosen colour palette. You can of course choose a couple of colours for your palette, just try to make sure they are all compatible.
Step 4. Rationalise your shoes - Shoes are the most bulky part of your luggage and if you can restrict the number of shoes you take with you, life will be much easier. But you don’t want to feel like you lack shoes either – I usually take one pair of classic black patent heels (maybe a second pair if I am going somewhere dressy like New York or Paris), a pair of ballet flats, ankle boots, a pair of comfortable shoes like converse or plimsols and a pair of gladiator sandals. Thats conservative and still 5+ pairs of shoes... eeep!
Step 5. Complete with Accessories - I usually take a few nice statement pieces of jewelry which I can throw on in the evening to feel a little bit more dressed up, such as a pair of tassel earrings or a gold coin necklace. My Asos floppy fedora always comes on holidays with me, I also almost always take a bag with a long shoulder strap so it can be worn cross body, so I can relax when wandering around busy train stations and streets.

Other tips?
Do a layout – when packing make sure to lay everything out on your bed so that you can visualize the outfits and how they will go together. This has been the one single factor that has helped me to create better holiday wardrobes.

Cosmetics and Beauty – I don’t own much make up and my beauty inventory usually consists of bronzer or blush, a good moisturizer and cleanser and maybe some mascara if I’m feeling adventurous. I do however often take my hair straightener for city breaks (but not beach breaks), knowing that most hotels will have a hair dryer.

Other key things to take? A good book  (Man Booker prize winners usually ticks the right boxes), ear plugs and an eye mask, a notebook for writing down ideas/travel stories, a good camera, and a great attitude. Oh and finally, make sure to roll your clothes up tightly so all of the above can fit in your carry on.

Update: If you have trouble packing it may also be that your wardrobe is in disarray. Why not follow my 7 Steps for Wardrobe Rehab here to make packing (and generally getting dressed) easier?

Favourite things...

Wednesday, May 4, 2011
When you live in the smallest apartment known to man (welcome to hong kong!) you need a few pretty things to keep you sane and make you smile.

DIY Full Mini Skirt

Saturday, April 9, 2011
Remember when I posted about having moved on from midi skirts because I feel like such a man repeller when I wear them? Well, I converted a number of my favourites to mini(ish) skirts - this is one of them. Infinitely wearable now, for both work and play. Whistles eat your heart out. Whats not to love?
wearing: vintage DIY skirt, thrifted belt, country road singlet, zara wedges.

Handmade Sequin Shorts

Sunday, April 3, 2011
I am COMPLETELY in love with these black sequin shorts. They are so fun! Don't they just scream 'let's go party!!'. Couldn't help dancing around the bedroom when I had them on... (ignore my ridiculous starfish-like dance moves...) They are a similar style to the lace ones I designed and blogged about yesterday- with a high paperbag waist and belt loops. I chose a small square sequin as they aren't as shiny as round ones, in an attempt to keep them a bit low key. Hands up if you want a pair? (would be perfect worn with some eye catching tangerine lippy - need to get onto that asap!)
wearing: sequin shorts designed by me, perfectly soft white tee from some random japanese brand, zara boots.

Keep it simple (stupid)

Thursday, March 31, 2011
I love a trend as much as the next girl, but if you catch me on the weekend I won't necessarily be colour blocking or going boho... In all likelihood I'll be wearing this, or variations of this. These thrifted high waisted black shorts are a definite must-buy. Put them on your essentials list and track down a nice pair.

Wardrobe Rehab - The Jacket

Thursday, March 17, 2011
So in the last couple of weeks I have been mulling over the Wardrobe Rehab series I did a while ago - where I put a serious amount of time and effort into overhauling my wardrobe before I left London. But recently I have been feeling the same way about my wardrobe that I felt before - totally uninspired standing in front of my cupboard in the morning. The horror! So last weekend I did a bit more of a cull, and I think I will continue to cull for the next couple of weeks.

I went through my jackets a few days ago and culled anything that I don't wear. In reality I am almost never going to wear heavy jackets in Hong Kong (other than sneaky trips to Shanghai) so I have put them away, and made a pile of things to sell consisting of jackets that I don't think I am going to wear again. Above is a pic of the things I have left in the jacket section of my wardrobe. As I was doing the cull I thought about what the most important things were to keep, and I came up with a few rules for essential jackets. Key jackets I kept?
  • The Black Blazer - an absolute essential. Should fit you like a glove and look great with pencil skirts for work and tight dark denim jeans and heels for Friday drinks.
  • The Statement Jacket - Mine is a vintage black beaded jacket I nabbed from a jumble in north london (I was part of the furniture at that place for a while). It is perfect for throwing over a simple outfit. Go for a super textured one in a beaded or sequin style.
  • The Camel Trench - A bit of a cliche perhaps but this comes in handy all the time, mine is hip length so not the classic style but looks amazing with trousers or jeans and flats.
  • The Leather - This goes without saying really. The leather jacket should be a staple in everyone's wardrobe. I have a beautiful faded tan one from Zara and an extremely supple bomber style from Whistles (both gifts from the bf). Spend as much as you can afford on this item, and choose a simple and classic style - you'll have it in your wardrobe forever.
  • The Khaki Hooded Jacket - Slightly military inspired, this jacket lends a little bit of edginess to a ladylike outfit and is perfect thrown over my weekend go-to outfit - uniqlo jeans, nautical breton top and black ballet flats. Luckily I bought a very light cotton one that will transition nicely into HK spring.
  • The other blazers - Red, White and Blue. These ones get a whole lot of wear. Buy a few well fitting blazers in different colours. Well cut jackets never go out.
Stay tuned for my wardrobe rehab posts on trousers, skirts and dresses. All in the name of 'buy less buy better'. Here's to the perfect wardrobe.

Jackets from left to right: Vintage round neck denim jacket, handmade Navy Blazer, Zara black blazer, Zara tan leather jacket, Whistles Leather Bomber Jacket, Vintage beaded statement jacket, Zara camel trench, Zara red short trench, white vintage blazer, H & M khaki hooded jacket.

Wardrobe Essential - the camel dress

Sunday, March 6, 2011
Made of a camel silk with a flouncy skirt and slightly puffed sleeves, this is another one of those dresses that looks amazing on and can be worn anywhere. I paired it this week with a DIY tassel belt - two tassels glued onto some black rope, and my DIY tassel earrings.

DIY More Wardrobe Rehabbing

Thursday, March 3, 2011
Got a pretty amazing delivery of goods from the tailor a few days ago, and have had to make room in my wardrobe for the things I liked, so have pulled a few vintage things out which I will be selling this week. Our little flat is kind of like a small boat, every time you bring something on board you have to get rid on something. Stay Tuned.

Weekend Uniform Round 2

Tuesday, February 22, 2011
Leather peg leg pants have found their way into my weekend uniform. These slouchy ones are a particular favourite. Alwayyys worn with a soft cotton tee or a breton style boat neck top.
Wearing: Gap cotton tee, vintage leather peg leg trousers, topshop ballet flats.

White Linen Blazer

Monday, February 14, 2011
Thrifted blazer and shorts. What's not to love? So many of you liked them yesterday so thought I would show you them on!
Wearing: thrifted white linen blazer, gap grey marl tee (definite essential), thrifted maroon wool shorts, zara ankle strap wedges, black crystal bracelet.

DIY Weekend Uniform

Saturday, February 5, 2011
This is all I really need. Whats your weekend uniform?
Zara satchel, uniqlo skinny jeans, esprit breton stripe top, gap lace triangle bra, engraved necklace from paris, mango boots, cat eye sunglasses from ebay.

DIY The Perfect LBD?

Monday, January 31, 2011
The search for the perfect little black dress has been a long and arduous one. I must have about 10 black dresses in my wardrobe (I was banned from buying them for a while there) but none of them are that perfect dress that works in any situation and will take you from work to a party to a dinner to your divorce court proceedings with ease. I decided it was high time I got one made in the shape, style and fabric I wanted. Having obviously done a lot of hands on research on the subject of black dresses, it wasn't hard to come up with this one. It has really nice paneling on the front and a lovely cinched in waist. Will probably wear it with sheer spotted or opaque tights for work. It's such a lovely shape I'll probably get it made in a few other colours and a longer version too.
Wearing: dress designed by me, reiss mesh heels.

Wardrobe Rehab - Stocking up on basics and essentials

Monday, January 24, 2011
I love how many of you have been inspired to rehab your wardrobe. Check out my six steps to wardrobe bliss in the right hand column if wardrobe rehab is new to you. Remember my post about basics and essentials and how important they are as the foundations of your wardrobe? Well I did an epic trip with a girlfriend up to Shenzen on the weekend, a Chinese border town known for its amazing shopping, and thought it a perfect opportunity to tick off a few things on my list of basics and essentials that I need. Here's a sneak peak at the inspiration for my purchases.
