DIY Burberry Tribal High Heels

Sunday, July 31, 2011
I recently made my own version of the gorgeous bead embellished heels from the Burberry 2012 Resort collection. I crafted mine by creating beaded embellishments to go over my shoes. This DIY is such a simple way to update your wardrobe - you can even use chains or different coloured beads for a different look.
Wearing: DIY Beaded shoe embellishments, New Look wide heel shoes, tribal mini from Thailand, Country Road singlet, Karen Walker Number One sunglasses.

DIY:
You need - brown and red wooden beads and black string.
1. I strung the beads so that I had two red and two brown strings of beads for each shoe - about 15cm long each.
2. I then tied two of each color together, securing at each end with black string, and then tying that string together in a bow at the back of the shoe. Essentially you will have 'necklaces' of brown and red beads for each shoe.
Voila! The best bit about these embellishments is you can wear them with any shoes, they also look great on some black t-bar flats I have. Instant tribal wardrobe updater.

A Pair & A Spare Spotted at Boohoo.com

Friday, July 29, 2011
The lovely Katey tweeted to me recently saying that she had spotted me in the recent boohoo.com style newsletter. How funny. This photo was taken by Wayne Tippetts at London Fashion Week last September, feels like a million years ago!
Wearing: Thrifted beaded jacket (possibly my favourite piece of clothing ever), vintage dior mens shirt, alexander mcqueen leather bustier, DIY camel shorts, thrifted envelope clutch, asos floppy fedora.

Hope you like the somewhat sour expression on my face, ha.

DIY 6 Week Detox - The Basics

Thursday, July 28, 2011
What better place to start when embarking on a mind-body-soul detox than with your health? I'm definitely no pro when it comes to nutrition and exercise (check out Joanna Hall or Miranda Kerr's Kora Organics blog if you want some better advice) but I have read enough to know what works for me. Don't for a second think I would embark on some ridiculous lemon water diet - let's face it, no one is fun to be around when they're hangry (hungry + angry = hangry). And what joy in life is there without good food? (surely I'm not the only person who structures their whole day around their next meal?).

Anyway, I did up a little collage of the health 'basics' for the six week detox. I guess the point of the basics is to just be consistently healthy - no crazy rules or regulations. To be honest - this is how you should live every week, and not just six weeks in a row. But baby steps, right?

Exercise - cos you know you have to. The four sessions I listed above are what work for me, but some people prefer more cardio or yoga or pole dancing or whatever. The point is to do 4 formal sessions of exercise per week. When I say 'pump' I mean anything that works your muscles and core - be it a class, TRX session, monkey bars, rock climbing etc. In addition, you want to maintain a certain level of activity on a daily basis - I like to walk everywhere I go so that's the easiest thing for me to commit to. Aiming to do 1km of walking as part of getting to work, 1km at lunch and 1km on the way home will have you almost there. May sound hard but its a conscious choice to make - leave early on the way to work and walk to the next tube stop, go up the stairs instead of the lift, get off your desk and do some errands at lunch.

Nutrition - Again, not rocket science. Pack your diet full of fruit and veges, lean meats and fish, and cut down on all the good stuff (booze, salt, sugar, fats). Swap your nightly starchy foods - like rice, noodles, pasta, bread, potatos etc, for beans, lentils and more vegies. This is a tip I picked up in one of Joanna Hall's books. I'm not usually the diet and lifestyle book type, but I found it in a North London jumble for a quid and it turned out to be the best pound I ever spent! I don't agree with the whole Atkins no carbs thing (Jessica Simpson looked wayyyyy hangry when she was on it) but limiting nightly intake makes sense. Luckily the bf is pretty handy in the kitchen and I got him onto making lentils, beans and veges as sides to fish or meat at night - and haven't looked back! If I get a chance I might post a few (of his) recipes here over the next 6 weeks.

For snacks, I'll be eating roasted unsalted nuts like almonds as well as fruit and crackers. Cutting down on alcohol is also a key element of the detox. I don't mean becoming teatotal, and it will all be relative to your current drinking levels, but having none during the week and only a few over the weekend seems to me to be a good approach (by ohhhhh so hard!).

I guess I failed to mention not to eat take away junk food, as in, ever. Its shit. I'll leave it at that. Although... one small cheeseburger may be allowed if you are incredibly hungover and stayed out until 4am the previous night. However if this is the case you probably already drank your weekly calorie intake in one night so a cheeseburger aint gonna kill you... (the detox sounds like its gone off the rails already!).

Hope you like and agree with my basics for the next 6 weeks, feel free to comment and add any of your insights! As a disclaimer, I'm definitely no pro in this area, but thought it might be nice to share some ideas. Sorry for the interruption to the usual fashion-related posts. Normal programming will resume shortly.

DIY Caramel Front Pleated Skirt - Collaboration with The Style Net

Wednesday, July 27, 2011
A little while ago the gorgeous Brooke of The Style Net suggested we collaborate on a DIY project to be hand picked by you (remember here?). We got heaps of votes for the front pleated skirt option so I set about making one. I tried to make mine a little different to the original (cue a Clueless soundbite - Murray after shaving his head at 'the Val' party: 'cos I'm keepin' it real. 'cos I'm keepin' it real!') , whilst sticking to the general premise of the style. It was incredibly simple to make, so be sure to check out the tutorial here at The Style Net. I chose to pair the earthy caramel of the skirt with my favourite colour of the moment - blue, and some tribal accessories.
Wearing: DIY skirt (tutorial here), A Pair & A Spare blue pocket front silk singlet, DIY bronze cuffs, tribal belt as a necklace, Nat Sui T bar flats, rope bag from Thailand.

The Blue Fringed Bag

Another man repelling wardrobe item? You got it! I love this bag I bought in Thailand, but the bf and my brother were completely against it. Men. have. no. idea. Right?
Outfit - DIY rug skirt, blue tassel bag, AP&AS white silk singlet.

Arabian Nights and Lazy Days

Sunday, July 24, 2011
Am in the process of recovering from an incredibly hectic weekend - which was admittedly all play and no work. I had a friend's Arabian Nights themed birthday party on a HK island beach on Friday - complete with a fake bearded dj and sand getting into allll the wrong places. It was possibly the best party I've ever been to - in.my.life. Lets just say between the glitter, gold headresses, swimming and dancing there were plenty of noteworthy wardrobe malfunctions! I'll post a few more pics of the night (and the amazing outfits!) once I muster the energy to download the rest of my photos.
This was early on at the party - which in the end felt like it stretched on for days. On the back of such a crazy week I am  currently planning a 6 week body and soul detox, which I may post a few details of - if you don't think it will bore you to tears.

Wearing: DIY Jil Sander Inspired pink maxi skirt, coin scarf belt, arabian headress, DIY beaded bra (previously a dress), mountains of glitter (that turned out to be pretty damn itchy).

DIY Gold Ankle Cuffs

Wednesday, July 20, 2011
These ankle cuffs are so incredibly cool - I'm on a mission to make a pair of my own. I would make sure they were detachable from the shoe so that I could wear them with all different heels. I'm sure there would be something in my local plumbing store that would work... Stay tuned!

DIY LBD #4 - Florence and the Machine at Glastonbury

Tuesday, July 19, 2011
Topshop designed the costumes for Florence of Florence and the Machine's performance at Glastonbury on the John Peel Stage in 2009. I was lucky enough to be in the audience and loved  the ethereal and haunting costumes (almost as much as the music). Who wouldn't fall for fringing, caped sleeves and feathers? These illustrations of the designs have inspired the 4th in my DIY little black dress series, which I am in the middle of creating. Can't wait to show you!

Woops, it was 2009 not 2010 as I first thought. Clearly once you've been to a few it becomes a bit of a blur!

Bronze Hex Cuffs

Monday, July 18, 2011
How cool are these huge bronze hex nuts? Perfect as cuffs.
Wearing: (stuff you've seen wayyyy too much by now) DIY pink mini, DIY rug bustier, Ash peep toe boots

Blue Uniform

Sunday, July 17, 2011
I have recently been completely taken with silk top and short sets. And bright blue colours like this one - which is a few shades south of cobalt.  I am loving the slightly 80's/uniform feel of wearing a top and shorts in the same fabric! It also gives the appearance of a onesie without the associated (and usually drunken) toilet debacles. What do you think, would you rock a matching set?
Wearing: A Pair & A Spare blue silk pocket front top and matching shorts with ribbon belt, River Island gladiator flats.

Pink Colour-Block Skirt

Saturday, July 16, 2011
I only need this DIY miniskirt over the summer - it was honestly like a second skin while I was in Thailand.  Perhaps I should throw out the rest of my clothes. Do you have anything in your closet that you wear and wear and wear?
wearing: A Pair & A Spare silk singlet, DIY Pink Mini Skirt,  Thailand rope bag with purple beaded tassel, river island flats, karen walker sunnies.

As a blogger perhaps you're not supposed to post the same item of clothing all the time - but the reality is that everyone has things they love and wear more than once. I'm only human!

DIY Inspiration - Balmain Resort

The Balmain 2012 Resort collection was filled with DIY inspiration - draped chains, embellished jackets, thigh high split skirts, and boots with gold embellished points. I have a million ideas about little DIYs to do based on these gorgeous pieces.

Thailand in Pictures

Thursday, July 14, 2011
A week spent in Thailand was heaven - it really is the perfect place to relax. I wasn't interested in the Patong party scene (pretty feral) so we stayed in Surin Beach which is a few beaches north, and utterly gorgeous. Early morning swims, lazing by the pool, getting massages (not the happy ending type), trawling night markets, eating absolutely delicious food and reading novels somehow took up a whole week! It's amazing how tired you get doing nothing. I'm not used to these types holidays - in the past when traveling I have usually found myself in Europe dashing from city to city trying to fit everything in. It makes you appreciate a relaxing holiday. It was monsoon season there and I was worried it would rain every day, but it was almost perfect weather - and low season which meant it was completely deserted. So good!
It's yet another beach holiday spent in a place that was badly affected by the Tsunami a few years ago (we stayed in Hikkadua in Sri Lanka over Christmas and heard some horrific stores) and the blue Tsunami evacuation route signs are a pretty clear reminder of how much the area has suffered, but has also bounced back.
