DIY Dress Inspiration

Tuesday, August 2, 2011
Am busy planning a dress for another wedding in Aus in September - when you spend most of your money flying about going to weddings you often have to make your own dress, haha. I am completely taken with this style of dress - mini at the front and maxi at the back. Definite inspiration for the upcoming project....

Btw how gorgeous did Sara (Harper & Harley) and Nicole (Gary Pepper Vintage) look at the Cosmopolitan Awards?  The amazing sequin blush dress is by Aussie designers AJE.

DIY LBD #4 - Florence and the Machine at Glastonbury

Tuesday, July 19, 2011
Topshop designed the costumes for Florence of Florence and the Machine's performance at Glastonbury on the John Peel Stage in 2009. I was lucky enough to be in the audience and loved  the ethereal and haunting costumes (almost as much as the music). Who wouldn't fall for fringing, caped sleeves and feathers? These illustrations of the designs have inspired the 4th in my DIY little black dress series, which I am in the middle of creating. Can't wait to show you!

Woops, it was 2009 not 2010 as I first thought. Clearly once you've been to a few it becomes a bit of a blur!

DIY LBD #3 - The Wrap Mini Dress

Sunday, July 10, 2011
My first video tutorial! You may remember the Side Split Wrap Dress I made a while ago, and I thought the style would make a perfect mini dress as part of my DIY LBD series. I made a short black skirt using a very basic skirt construction method (see an example here) and then wrapped the bodice section as you see in the moving image. I then put my DIY Beaded Belt over the top.

Here's the tutorial. If you can't see it pop over to my Vimeo account here where you can also watch it. Make sure it starts from the beginning as sometimes it skips forward a few seconds. You'll need about 2m of black silk fabric  of around 50cm width (in addition to the fabric for the skirt). I have a bikini top on in this tutorial to start with but you will do it without anything on.

DIY Mara Hoffman Inspired Sarong Dress

Friday, July 8, 2011
Recently, whilst doing some virtual window shop over at Net-A-Porter, I found this amazing Mara Hoffman dress which I was completely besotted by. I posted about it yesterday as part of my summer DIY to do list. Anyway, thought I would show you pics of me trying to emulate this gorgeous dress while in Thailand. Don't you love how the draped fabric makes the perfect cut outs? My version is definitely more suited to the beach, but you could also make one using a busier top and some fabric which would work as a non-beach dress. I may just do that!
Thought I would throw in a pic of Surin Beach where I spent most of my time in Thailand. It was divine.

DIY Collaboration with The Style Net - Choose Your Own Adventure!

Monday, June 20, 2011
I am really excited to be collaborating with The Style Net on a few DIY projects over the next couple of months. Head over to The Style Net's facebook page to vote for the DIY project you would like me to do - choose your own adventure (how fun were those books when you were a kid?). Simply 'like' your favourite look in the album and hopefully the project you choose I'll be recreating in the coming weeks. Easy as.

DIY Inspired Collection - Milin

Friday, June 17, 2011
Stumbled across this collection from Thai designers Milin over at The Fashion Inbox (very fun fellow HK blogger) and was inspired by its beauty - as usual I picked out a few DIY-able details including wrapped halter tops, cut out singlets, tie dye, fabric wrapped heels, pleated minis and cute shorts. I adore this collection! And how hot are the first pair of high waisted trousers?

LBD #1: DIY Cut Out Back Minidress

Thursday, June 16, 2011
This is the first DIY in the little black dress series. As soon as I saw this gorgeous dress on Rosie Huntington-Whitely (over at one of my favourite inspiration blogs Studded Hearts), I just had to make my own version. I particularly liked how the cut out part of the white Max Mara version came around the front of the ribs so the dress looked 'cut out' from both the back and the front.
DIY:
You'll need - a thrifted dress, scissors, chalk and a needle and thread. I used this dress, which is made out of a thick silk fabric, because I had it already, but you can also use a slinky jersey one for a more sexy look (like Rosie).
1. Put the dress on and get someone to draw the cut out bits on you. You want to draw on an upside down 'U' shape which keeps some fabric at the back of the neck so the dress retains its shape. (The bfs chalk marking was slightly lopsided but I managed to correct that once I took it off).
You also want to make the 'U' shape come around the front of the dress to form the side cut outs. Make sure to get these perfectly symetrical - I used the front seams as an indication.
2. Cut the dress out along the chalk line. Remember you want to be able to open and close the dress at the back of the neck so don't, whatever you do, cut it all out. As my dress had a zip down the back, I cut it out along with the fabric but I left a small length of extra zip, and then folded the two teeth of the zip over to create a new end to the zip.
3.Sew all the edges of the cut out fabric by rolling over and securing with small stitches. (Long on the inside and tiny on the outside).
4. Sew two sets of hook and eyes onto the back neck fastening to secure the dress. I also cut about a foot or so off the bottom of the dress too and re-hemmed it.

Voila! It turned out a little bit 'prettier' than my usual style but its really fun to wear.

DIY on the Runway - Michael Kors Resort Collection

Wednesday, June 15, 2011
All these resort collections I'm being bombarded with are very very distracting. Michael Kors' collection particularly caught my eye. Whats even more fun? The collection was inspired by a long trip to Australia - I can totally feel it! DIY details? Yessir. Take your pick from oversized shirts, belted swimwear, neoprene, gorgeous cutouts and thigh high splits. Get some resort inspiration in your life.

DIY little. black. dress. series

Monday, June 13, 2011
Over the next month or so I am going to be doing a series of DIYs based around the humble LBD. In this series I'm going to give step by step tutorials for DIYing a number of different perfect and on-trend LBDs. Think cut outs, tassels, leather and everything in between. Here is a little bit of inspiration for you - I'll be posting the first one of the series this week.

DIY Multi Colour Bodycon Dress

Saturday, May 14, 2011
I saw these multicoloured rugs down at my local dollar store, which are made out of recycled jersey t-shirts. They have a great amount of stretch to them so I bought a few for fun. I fell in love with the multi-coloured, ever so slightly tribal look. After making the skirt you may have seen a few days ago, I also decided to make a dress.
DIY
You need: 4 rugs, a long white zip for the back, a sewing machine.
1. Sew two of the rugs together at the long edge to create one large piece of fabric. Do this to the other two rugs as well. I just hand stitched this.
2. Pin the zip down the middle of one of the pieces of fabric.
3. Sew the zip onto the fabric.
4. Cut the fabric where the zipper has been sewed on to complete the opening.
5. Trace out the dress shape onto the fabric using a bodycon dress.
6. Pin the two large pieces of fabric together flat and sew down the marked pattern of the dress.
7. Cut the excess fabric off along the stitch line - its best to do this once the seam has been sewn as the fabric starts falling apart once you cut into it.
8. This is what the finished dress will look like - turn it inside out and away you go!
Here's the back.
