DIY Leather Shorts and Velvet Bow

Saturday, February 19, 2011
Thought I would show you the DIY outfit I wore this weekend. Remember these leather shorts I made when I was living in London? Well when I made them out of a pair of trousers I just rolled the hems up. I never really wore them though, something about the rolled hems put me off. I was going to sell them off as part of a re-cull of my wardrobe, but realised I could glue the hems over like I did recently to a pair of tan trousers. To do this I simply folded the hem over, ironed it down, checked it was straight and then used some superglue to glue the edges. Easy! And they look perfect. So happy to have rejuvenated them. Also hope you like the little velvet bow that I wore with my thrifted collared shirt. A bit Jason Wu no?
Wearing: Vintage collar shirt, DIY velvet bow tie, DIY leather shorts, Zara wedges (I wear these alll the time).

DIY Weekly - Tan Suede Shorts

Wednesday, February 2, 2011
Found a gorgeous pair of Guess vintage tan suede pants at my local thrift market for $60HK - about £5. They were really cute but when I tried them on they were a little bit too early 90s (friends circa season 1) for me to wear them much. Decided they would make a very cute pair of shorts. So did my usual thing and cut them off. To hem them I actually turned the hem in, ironed flat and then glued the hem down. I had noticed previously that hems on leather trousers and shorts are often glued. Was so easy and worked really well. So next time you make some leather shorts out of trousers, get some superglue and glue the hems down instead of rolling or folding.

The weather is supposed to be a smashing 25 degrees celsius this weekend (4 day weekend for Chinese NY!) and planning on getting out on the boat, these shorts will come in handy.

Wearing: DIY shorts, thrifted white tee, zara wedge boots, zara satchel, asos floppy fedora, neon orange ribbon worn as bracelet.

Are we friends on twitter? I love to ramble about DIY inspiration and upload pics of DIYs I see on the street. If you don't have a twitter account (like I didn't for agessss), think about getting one - its actually pretty fun and only a tiny bit lame haha.

DIY Folded Hem Leather Shorts

Friday, January 21, 2011
Found this tutorial on Fashion Nicotine for making leather shorts out of pants, I have made quite a few pairs in my time but I really like how she has folded the hem inside and then over so the right side of the leather shows on the outside. I have a tan suede pair of shorts that are going to get this treatment this weekend. Securing the hems with a few stitches at the sides will make sure they don't fall down.

DIY Shearling Hemmed Shorts

Gorgeous and so easy! Just glue or sew some shearling fabric to the hem of some mini shorts - use ones with a fairly heavy fabric like felt, velvet or leather.

DIY Leather Shorts

Monday, December 6, 2010
My lovely friend MJ from Dreaming Spires and Old Car Tyres has made these gorgeous leather shorts out of a pair of vintage leather trousers. Delicious! If you want to make your own follow my instructions here. The leather mini shorts I made when I was in London are getting a huge work out in HK.

Bras n shorts

Thursday, November 18, 2010
Recently bought a few cute triangle bras, they are so sweet and makes you wish it was appropriate to wear just bras n shorts. The bf is in HK and the house is full of girls - laughing, crying and lots of chat, bras n shorts seem appropriate. Also, have been LOVING the spreads Sara of Harper and Harley has been doing, of which the image below is one. Everytime I see one I think 'thats what I want to wear' - if it wasnt 3 degrees outside obviously.

DIY Leather Fringe Shorts

Tuesday, October 12, 2010
These shorts are very beautiful, with the tassels and leather front. Make your own by taking some thrifted shorts (or make shorts out of thrifted trousers), gluing some leather onto the front, and then tying some strips of leather twine along the edges to create a fringe.

Heading to Rome for a five day weekend next week, and I think I'll definitely be channelling these lovely sand colours.

DIY Weekly - Leather Mini Shorts from Trousers

Saturday, October 9, 2010
Here are the buttery leather trousers I bought this week for three quid that, because I didn't try them on, turned out to look pretty rubbish when I took them home - due to a boot leg that couldn't be DIYed into a straight leg (sad face). I already have a pleated, more roomy, pair of leather shorts,  so I happily turned these ones into (tight) leather shorts. I know there are always heaps of not-quite-right leather trousers in the charity shops that I got to so don't pay through the nose for leather mini shorts. DIY them!
Here's how to do it:
1. Put trousers on in the mirror and draw a line with chalk to indicate how long you want them to be.
2. Take them off and cut them off a few inches down from the line you drew (always airing on the side of caution).
3. Roll the hems over, checking the length in the mirror.
4. Sew the roll. You can also glue the edge if you would prefer, glue is often used to secure leather at hems etc. I didn't actually bother doing either, the roll stays in place when they are on anyway.
I got my boyfriend to help me check the length when I put them on, although his answer to the question 'are these too short' is always 'no' so I have to take his responses with a grain of salt. They ended up being pretty damn short, although they had to be to reduce the 'leather cycle shorts' look. (I apologise for so much thigh action so early on a Sunday). Now I have some leather left over to do some other DIYs with, so stay tuned.

Ps. Have you entered my LFW Mulberry Tote Giveaway? Looking forward to giving it away to one lucky reader so get to it!

DIY Maje Leather sleeved cardigan

Thursday, October 7, 2010
So yesterday I bought a black pair of leather pants. Being the dodgiest charity shop on the east side I wasn't able to try them on, and was sad to find when I got home that the boot leg was neither flattering or 'fashion forward' (for three quid you can't really complain). Alas, the pants are destined to be made into black leather shorts with a rolled hem, which will leave me with a significant amount of black buttery leather. Saw the leather sleeved 'botox' cardigan in this Maje ad (bottom right), and while if I had a million bucks I would probably shop there, atleast now I know what I am going to do with the left over leather. I think I will cut and glue the leather over the sleeves of a grey cardigan.
