You think these trends will go away after a while, but I still love the cut out shoulder shirt as much as I did when I first saw it on Hanelli a long long time ago (in fashion years). Follow my tutorial here (equally old) but use a oversized mens shirt this time to create a dress.
Obviously I wet my pants when I found out that Miroslava Duma now does outfit posts. Does anyone else wish you could carry her around in your pocket (as she is so tiny) and pull her out when you need style advice?

DIY Two Way Shirt
Friday, May 27, 2011 at 6:37 PM
Found this cute Uniqlo shirt over at Shini's blog Park & Cube (literally my visual sugar). How good! If you dont have a Uniqlo near you why not make one yourself by adding some button and button holes to a shirt?

DIY Inspiration - Dion Lee
Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 6:54 PM
Every so often a designer comes out of the woodwork and delivers a collection so full of DIY that I need to take a moment to collect myself. Dion Lee's AW11 collection has my mind swirling with DIY ideas - mens shirts, cut outs, sheerness and more. Oh no you dint! Although I must say Dion has been producing collections with covetable DIYable details for a while now (remember the blazer with cut out sleeves?).

DIY Cut Out Shirt
Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 6:14 AMThe number of times I have posted about cut out collared shirts is more than I can count on both hands, but designers keep coming up with ways to inspire me to take some scissors to a thrifted shirt! This is a new and fun way to cut out a shirt seen in the recent Carla Spetic collection. This.has.weekend.project.all.over.it.
Reader DIY - Cut Out Back Shirt
Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 3:32 AM
The lovely Natale Eve of Evelesco has had a crack at the cut out back DIY I did a while ago and has done a pretty amazing job on this royal blue shirt. Love the sheer lace bralette worn underneath.
DIY in Bodkin ss11 Lookbook
Monday, December 6, 2010 at 7:48 PM
Came across this gorgeous lookbook for Bodkin on the Wildfox blog, and loved just about every image. The cute pastels and african style silver jewellery looks amazing, and kind of makes me think of what it would be like to go on an african safari with Maria from Vanilla Scented. So many little details that inspire me to DIY. Check it out.
DIY some rope/leather straps on a top or dress by attaching and tying like a bow like so:
Layer a khaki jacket or sew matching flaps onto the underside for an extra detail.
Make yourself a halter style dress out of a mans button down shirt.
Shorten a skirt by tying it in a knot at the front.

Reader DIYs!
Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 1:38 AM
The reader DIYs are flowing in thick and fast, I am so happy to see such amazing projects. The lovely Sophie of Owl vs Dove has done this amazing cut shoulder shirt DIY. I adore her blog and its gorgeous simple aesthetic, if you haven't checked it out you need to. Was so happy to see I had inspired her! To make her shirt she has used the simple method of cutting along the shoulder seams and then sewing the edges - letting the shoulders drop down in a really cute way! Love how she describes herself having a 'crafternoon' when she did it. I am allll about the crafternoon.
The gorgeous Carly of Chic Steals just keeps whipping up amazing DIY creations, this time perfecting the leather collared shirt DIY I did while ago here. Damn she's good. And how cute is the shirt worn with her mulberry inspired DIY skirt she guest posted here about?
Ps. trying to decide on a font for the blog, they all seem to hurt my eyes!

DIY Details on the Runway - Dries Van Noten SS11
Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 10:13 AM
I love coming across a collection that is so heavily inspired by DIYable details. This beautiful Dries Van Noten collection shot by Tommy Ton has so much DIY I don't know where to start.
Key DVN details to DIY:
Key DVN details to DIY:
- Keep tying your oversized collared mens shirts as skirts (bloggers have been doing it for a while - art imitating life perhaps?)
- Dipped bleached denim - bleach your denim shirts and jeans by dipping into bleach. Leave for a while in the bleach to get the very white on blue look.
- Deconstructed jackets - still a favourite, attach different sleeves to a jacket.

For those of you who are too thrifty to even buy scissors - here's a good DIY for you. In place of the cut out shoulders, go for ripped ones!

DIY Ribbon Cut Out Shirt Dress
Friday, September 24, 2010 at 3:19 AM
Remember my post here about making a shirt dress from a thrifted men's shirt (cut off the sleeves, take in at the side seams and away you go)? Saw this dress from the recent Philip Lim show, so cute! Make a shirt dress as per my previous instructions, then cut out two panels at the front of your shirt dress like below, leaving the button strip attached - finally glue on two bows in the middle of the panels.

DIY Deconstructed Shirts
Monday, September 20, 2010 at 12:24 AM
Everywhere I look I see designers using deconstructed clothing as their inspiration. This is a perfect example of how taking something away (such as shoulders and midriff section) makes it better. I'd encourage all of you to have a go at deconstructing your old clothes - by removing shoulders, midriffs, collars, sleeves etc!

DIY Cut Out Shirt

Yet another gorgeous way to show off a cute lace bra. Pick up an oversized white collared shirt from a charity shop, and cut a slit in the back so that it drapes down.

(LOVE the 'my favourite things' shots by Tommy Ton of Christine Centenera. If there was one persons closet I would burgle... And the golden sunshine in all the images makes me a teeny tiny bit homesick for aus)

The DIY potential using nothing but a men's shirt appear to be limitless! This DIY playsuit out of a mens shirt is unbelievably cool, particularly in the Hawaiian print. See Nice and Shiny's post here for tutorial and detailed instructions.

A girl after my own heart! Rocking a men's shirt as a dress, by cutting off the sleeves and crossing over the fabric at the front using a belt to cinch in the waist. Perfect!

Everyone is getting on the bandwagon of the folded mens shirt worn as a skirt. See my recent post on this here. Sandra from 5 inches and up does hers really well.

DIY - Ruffle Hem Shirt Dress
Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 7:17 AM
Another DIY using a mans shirt - I hope your bf/brother/father/housemate has a lock on his cupboard...
Grab a long mens patterned shirt, the longer the better. Cut off the sleeves to create a basic shirt dress as outlined in another one of my posts here. Then cut off the dress at the bottom, making the front about five inches shorter than the back. You will have a thick strip of fabric left over - trim it so that it is a rectangle and then cut it in half lengthways so that you have two long strips of the same width, sew these together so you have a long strip, hopefully about 5 inches wide or more, this is going to be the little 'skirt'. You can hem one edge of this fabric if you want, but I would probably leave mine to fray (stylish or lazy? you decide). Create some rough pleats in this strip of fabric by running a simple stitch along one edge of the fabric and pulling the cotton tight, pushing the fabric along so the fabric gathers to create light pleats. Make the desired amount of pleats, and then sew the pleated fabric to the bottom of the shirt dress. done!

DIY - Mens shirt as a skirt
Monday, July 5, 2010 at 5:19 AM
Love DIYs that require no more effort than a bit of draping. Both Shini from Park & Cube and one of the girls from Anywho have done a fantastic job of using a mens long sleeved shirt to DIY a great skirt. Love the little detail of the twisted arms, takes the edge of it and reduces how much it looks like a shirt tied around your waist. Doing up the bottom button of the shirt (the skirts hem) so that one side of the skirt hangs down further at the front also makes it more interesting. There is a tutorial on Monoxious here for making an actual skirt in a similar way. I rather like the idea of simply draping and tying (probably because this requires the smallest time investment!). Also good because you don't do any lasting damage to your boyfriends fabourite checked shirt!
