LOVING - COLLAR NECKLACES

Sunday, August 14, 2011
Collars have been having a moment. For a looong while now.  Remember my collar DIYs here and here? Seems like an eternity ago. I absolutely loved this colourful post over at Frockshop's blog, and it's clear that now its all about the statement collar necklace. I recently bought this black beaded one from a local Hong Kong designer - and I've hardly taken it off!

Wearing: Beaded collar necklace, A Pair & A Spare silk tank, A Pair & A Spare knitted high-waisted shorts, Anniel ballet flats.

Psst... You might be seeing a little DIY collar necklace here in the coming weeks!

DIY Bronze Bolt Necklace

Very simple bolt necklace using suede and a bronze bolt thingy.
If you love frizzy hair you should definitely move to Hong Kong. I recommend it.

DIY Neon Pink Pom Pom Necklace

Sunday, May 29, 2011
My gorgeous friend Natalie of Canned Fashion hinted to me recently that she had done a fabulous DIY - and I stumbled upon its gloriousness on Grazia.it in these amazing pics taken by the ever-talented Vanessa Jackman. How rad is this neon pink pom pom necklace? Hoping to get the 411 on the tutorial from Natalie herself sometime soon.

DIY Plumbing Bolt Necklace

Sunday, April 24, 2011
Have taken to staying as far away from clothes stores as possible during lunchtime at work - stumbled onto the most amazing and well stocked plumbing store ever and spent a few honky on bolts and whatnot. The Chinese workmen going about their usual business thought I was completely mad. I then used some velvet ribbon to layer a few bolts and make a necklace. Shop my closet here.

DIY Studded Bib Necklace

Thursday, March 31, 2011
Gosh this necklace is cool in another one of Vanessa Jackman's amazing pics. Perfect mix of cute pastel pink and edgy studs. When I was in London I bought these crazy studded leather arm cuffs from the jumble, and I have held onto them because I knew I would see a project like this for which I could use them. Next project? A studded bib necklace of course.

DIY Tribal Necklace

Thursday, March 3, 2011
Saw this gorgeous gold necklace in this editorial and was reminded of a gold coin belt I bought in a market near my work last week, for an absolute steal. Wore it as a necklace over a white silk business shirt, its so beautiful.

DIY On the Streets of NYFW

Tuesday, February 15, 2011
I have to say that style on the streets of the fashion weeks always inspires me to DIY soooo much, its always so much more quirky, real and do-able than what you see in magazine spreads and on the runway. Don't let the relaxed nonchalance of the subjects fool you though, these outfits didn't happen over night. What you are seeing is the culmination of hours of outfit planning. I've trawled the net for some up to the minute streetstyle DIY inspiration. Enjoy!

Wrap a very long length of black chain around your neck like this, amazing update to any outfit.
Ok so this Celine clutch is beyond amazing, head to your local stationary store and find an oversized neon pencil case. In fact oversized pencil case style clutches have been all over the street in NY in a whole range of colours. Go for it.
This has just got to the the most perfect jeans length. I Die! Or something like that... Anyway, this DIY is pretty straightforward, scissors, opposable thumbs, jeans, done.
Love these snuggly mittens, take a regular pair of wool mittens and sew/glue some faux fur fabric onto the front. Perfect for keeping the winter chills out.
Another oversized pencilcase you say? Why yes! This one has a black tassel attached, thats not too difficult is it.

DIY Blogger Discovery - Rar Traum Store

Sunday, February 6, 2011
Have discovered another amazing DIY blog - Rar Traum Store. The lovely Gabriela contacted me and mentioned that she did a few DIYs... I checked out her blog and Phoahhhh! I think you would probably call her work designing rather than DIY - its a hell of a lot more than a slapdash craft project. What I particularly like about her work is her ability to take a piece of junk - even things she finds in the trash or in scrap bins - and turn them into something utterly amazing. She has made some amazing jewellery using stones, crushed glass, scrap metal and just about everything else, and I adore her crazy denim jacket - very Balmain. My favorite piece of hers is an amazing deconstructed clock. Head over to her blog and check it out yo.
Do you love her Gaga inspired crown?

DIY Crystal Stone Necklace

I am extremely excited about all the upcoming runway shows throughout fashion month, particularly due to the DIY inspiration that always results. I took one look at these beautiful pics on Anywho from the recent Veronica B. Vallenes show and knew the stone necklace being sported by the models was a definitely DIY. As if by fate I went over to Lamma Island today for a hike, and came across this market stall selling the most amazing stones for next to nothing. Bought a few bits and pieces so look forward to some serious massive-rock-on-neck jewellery in future. Will pick up some delicate chains and maybe some coil to bind it all together.

Can't wait to get crafty!

DIY Lady Garden

Tuesday, January 18, 2011
Our new little flat in Hong Kong is starting to feel like home. We've settled in well and I'm honestly so happy to be here, it's such a fun and enchanting city. Living in the most densely populated city in the world obviously means we don't have an Aussie style backyard, but have been busily bringing the outside in using plants and flowers (haven't graduated to a tamagochi yet but may well get there!). I'm going to be steadily adding to our collection of indoor plants and cacti as the year progresses, maybe adding one every time I feel like I've kicked a goal. Tea cups are perfect pot plants too! Do you like the mania mania style rough crystal pendant necklace I bought when I was travelling in Sri Lanka? I'll post an shot of me wearing it when I get a chance. Below are a few other little purchases from my trip including a porcelain leaf,  an 'elebank' and zebra printed note book (which is almost full already!). I could have gone wild with shopping but am trying to keep my life on the minimal side. Seriously sucks sometimes though. (ps the title is a joke)

DIY Shell Necklace

Monday, December 27, 2010
As mentioned in my last post, I've been hitting the beach in the south of Sri Lanka, and its been gorgeous - so quiet and wild. We've been staying in a beachside national park where the monkeys play while you're having breakfast, a big grey elephant rubbed itself against our cabin last night and you can hear the waves while you sleep. I trawled the beach this morning for some DIY materials like shells and rocks. I found this lovely burnt orange and white shell, perfect match for my shorts and straw hat. Then set about making myself this gorgeous shell necklace - why not do a little DIY while hanging by the pool? I tapped a hole into the top of a shell and passed a silver chain through it. Perfect and simple holiday DIY. If you're on the beach this Christmas why not make one yourself?

Are you following me on twitter? Blogging is light on atm but I have been uploading pics and updates to twitter so go here to get amongst it. Love getting your questions and comments. Hope you've all had an amazing Christmas!

DIY Tiny Bags as Jewellery

Monday, December 6, 2010
Spotted these two images over at Vanilla Scented, and have noticed this cute little trend emerging around the blogosphere (you know when you see something on a blog and totally forget where you saw it - I am sure I saw this last week but can't remember where). Buy yourself an almost comically small bag and wear it as a statement necklace. Cute! Perfect for fitting in your small change.

DIY Weekly - Leather Collar Necklace

Monday, November 8, 2010
My favourite DIY to date has to be this leather collar necklace. So cute and so SERIOUSLY easy. You could probably do this even if you didn't have opposable thumbs. I was inspired to make one when I saw something similar in a shop on Upper Street, and took a few pics of it on my iphone because it looked pretty easy to make - trying to hide from the shop assistant because you can never be sure in those small shops whether they want you to rip off their designs or not.... I'm guessing not. When I got home, I used the tiny pic on my phone to help me make a template for the collar out of denim.
Here's how I did it:
1. I did a rough sketch on some denim using the pic I took of the £75 inspiration collar to decide the correct shape. I was surprised how easy it was to get the shape right actually. I think it only took me ten minutes.
2. I cut out the denim collar and tried it on to check the shape and size. I then traced the template onto some leather I had left over from another DIY (I have done atleast half a dozen DIYs from the leather from a pair of trousers I turned into shorts)
3. In terms of dimensions, take a look at the pic above.
4. A belated shot of the materials you'll need (haha). scissors check! chalk check! leather check! hook and eye check! (hook and eye not shown, don't worry you're not blind).
5. Cut the leather out.
6. Round the bottom edges as shown. The above is the final shape. Mine had a funny seam at the back from the trousers that isn't ideal but it was fine in the end.
7. Sew on the hook and eye fastening as shown, on the underside with the hook and eye bits just showing under the edge.
8. Voila! You're leather collar is done. When wrapped the neck the collar takes shape!
And here's me wearing it... Don't ask what was in the glass, I can't exactly remember. Definitely juice and soooommmething. Think I will make it out of some white leather to wack over the top of bodycon dresses. Add sequins/beads for sparkle.

Thanks to Natalie of Canned Fashion for taking the pics!
